Hi Arlene! I was Sooooo excited to see a new episode downloading to my IPod. Thanks so much for jumping back in. I love hearing you and find your podcasts to be one of my favorites. I am a knitter, but would love to try tatting one of these days. I would appreciate any advice you can give on the podcast or by email as to how I could go about learning. Is it something I could teach myself like I did knitting? You've inspired me. Maybe I will pick up my blog again where I left off last February! lol Keep the episodes coming. Just like Meghan from Stitch It, you have become an encourager in my life!

I personally like David reed Smith shuttles more than what you get in stores but really well made and not to pricey for the long haul. Having said that many love the clovers or susan bates and I think that is great to start. Try Handy hands for sources. My best recommendation to look for books is Lacis or Snowgoose and Handy hands for threads. I would seriously try out youtube and type in tatting demonstrations...I still check it out for spinning and knitting as well!

Hi Arlene,
I just found your podcast and listened to them all in a couple of days at work. I have enjoyed them so much! I taught myself to tat about 25 years ago but let it slide when having and raising my five children. Now they are all off to college and I have felt liking taking up tatting again. I'm not sure I can remember how to do it. I'm hoping it's like riding a bike. That being said, do you have some suggestions for a beginning book I could get and what shuttle is a good one? I know you must be very busy with your new responsibilities at work but I hope you will find some time to get back to your podcasting. They are so great! I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you!

An entertaining podcast as usual! It was very fun to have your company as I puttered around in the kitchen last night. Just like a good gab session. I really should work on DH's socks today, but I'm considering casting on for my very first sweater and it's going to be for me!

Thanks for the re-upload! I was able to download it just fine. Finally I found out what I'd missed about what you were knitting and spinning. I was afraid I'd miss it. Sorry for all the technical woes. At least Podbean works well for downloaders (other free services seem to have issues more frequently)

I am going to re-upload this episode to see if I can get rid of the repeats...can NOT figure out how that would happen except that the site kept booting me off and I think it re-started where it left off!! Ah well

Think of glow-in-the-dark and solar-active threads as the tatting equivalent of novelty yarn, then it all makes sense :) Happy New Year Arlene (P.S. Podbean cut off the last few minutes of the podcast...?)

I love to knit socks. A little over a year ago I knit a pair for my Grandpa. He is 83 and always has cold feet. For the past week we've been traveling 2 hours each way to visit as he just entered a hospice center. Knitting keeps me sane in the car, as well as sitting by his bed. Grandpa passed away Sunday, March 2 while my uncle and I were spending the night with him. The hospice nurse and I were sitting with him while Uncle went to get Grandma and bring her back. I wondered if Grandpa had my socks on, and the nurse said "let's check." He didn't, but they were in his drawer so we put them on him. My socks stayed with him as he was buried this past Friday. When my brother flew in for the funeral, he was wearing his hand-knit socks; my son and I wore our socks the day of the funeral. And the 4+ hour drive "down home" to where Grandpa was buried produced a new dishcloth to send home with my brother, and the start of a new pair of socks. Life goes on and we always need socks. It gives us the opportunity to put all our love and good wishes into a tangible object that gets passed on.

I have two comments on your recent podcast. The first one I hope you might address in a future podcast.

I also love the book Tatting with Visual Patterns by Mary Konior. Do you think most tatters these days prefer to have a diagrammed pattern to follow, or the written out directions like the ones from the old Workbasket magazines? I'm planning to design a tatting pattern and wonder if I should create instructions in both styles.

Thanks for your suggestions!
